The key is restraint. Ghost notes should be felt more than heard. Keep them 20–30% of the main note velocity, use a short note length, and apply a low-pass filter to remove any harshness. How Do You Use Pitch Movement and Slides to Create Tension and Release?

Static pitch is the enemy of interesting bass. Even the most minimal tech house tracks use pitch movement to create moments of tension and resolution. Slides and glides, where the pitch shifts smoothly rather than jumping, are one of the defining characteristics of the genre's bass sound.

Program a pattern that stays on the root for the first two bars, then introduces a sliding fourth or fifth movement in bar three before resolving back in bar four. This four-bar arc creates a natural sense of structure that DJs and dancers respond to instinctively. The stab and sustain pattern alternates between two contrasting articulations: a sharp, percussive stab and a long, sustained note. The stab punches through on a rhythmically strong position, while the sustain carries across the bar and adds harmonic weight. Together they create a bass part that functions almost like a rhythmic instrument and a melodic instrument at the same time.

This pattern works best in drops and peak-time sections where you want maximum energy. Use the stab to anchor the groove on the kick, then let the sustain bleed across beats two and three before the pattern repeats. Apply a compressor with a fast attack to tighten the sustain and prevent it from overwhelming the mid-range, and automate the filter cutoff to bring the sustain in and out for dynamic variation across longer sections of the track.
